Piano Tuning Tools: 42 Amazon Tool Recommendations
There's a limited amount of good piano tools supplies available on Amazon. Most of the best tools are available through piano tool warehouses.
Here's a list of almost 50 or so piano technician tools that you can easily purchase on Amazon.
This is a best seller piano tuning hammer on Amazon that most people keep after they order it.
I've owned a few of these kits and have largely given away the supplies and levers to beginner technicians to help them out on their piano tech journey.
This next piano tuning hammer for piano technicians is really the only tuning lever I'd recommend to purchase on Amazon.
Though it has a less extensive number of mutes, felts, tools, the lever/hammer itself is higher quality than any of the other levers available on Amazon.
This is primarily an upright piano voicing tool for piano technicians available on Amazon.
It's necessary to trim down the length of the needles to the length desired for each specific voicing technique/purpose.
The great part about this upright piano voicing tool for piano tuners is that the angle of the 4 needles can be adjusted against the handle to point it conveniently for upright piano voicing purposes.
This basic grand voicing tool (while a good low cost option) is sub-optimal because the 3 needles are spaced too far apart to accommodate the strings grooves of most grand pianos.
The tool could be an "okay" starting grand voicing tool for beginners, except that needles are spaced a millimeter or two far-apart.
I'm honestly very surprised to see that CLP lubrication is now available on Amazon.
It's highly convenient to purchase CLP from Amazon without having to go through traditional piano supply networks.
When necessary, this lubrication can be used sparingly on specific areas inside of the piano.
This single needle voicing tool is typically used by piano technicians on grand pianos.
The tool can be used while the case parts are still installed, meaning, it's unnecessary to remove anything from the piano in order to reach the hammers with this tool.
Though this tool is a little pricey, it's well worth the cost of keeping at least one of these tools with you in your tuning kit. (Provided that you've been sufficiently trained in voicing grand pianos).
It's always great to get new piano tuning mutes. They're fresh and free from tarnish, dirt, and fading of color.
Re-stock on piano tuning mutes in a jiffy and re-new how it feels to tune the piano.
For hard-to-reach piano tuning pins, this extra long piano tuning tip will allow for tuning hammers to reach the tuning pin over plate struts that are particularly high.
Every now and then, you'll have to reach over a tall plate strut with your piano tuning lever. Rather than getting in a twist, screw on this extra long piano tuning tip and tune like normal.
This tool measures a few standard regulation specifications which makes it particularly useful:
Letoff
Back checking
Hammer blow distance
These basic measurements help you with a few of the regulation specs when regulating a piano as a piano technician.
Easing keys (correctly) is one of the most valuable repairs that can be done. The reason is because there are many, many cases of "sticky keys" that most piano owners have experienced at one time or another.
While this tool is best when you're able to fully remove the key from the key frame, it's a wonderful tool to use to prevent sticky keys.
This piano technician tool can be used for a variety of different purposes:
Hammer Drop
Letoff for upright piano
Repetition lever height
Jack spacing
It's highly convenient to be able to purchase this particular tool on Amazon. It's incredible to see how more and more piano technican tools are offered on their platform.
If you look closely on many pianos, you'll see that the string spacing is never perfect. There are always improvements to be made.
Typically, brand new pianos require the least amount of string spacing, however, when strings are new they may use some "help" settling in. This eliminates "false beating" or "impurities" in the tone of the string.
For older pianos, many pianos could use a touch up when it comes to string spacing. Poor string spacing is also evident on the string grooves imprinted upon the felt hammers.
This is a hypo-oiler that piano technicians love to use when applying lubricants or voicing liquids.
It's great to keep a few of these in stock in case you'd like a better way to apply liquids in specific areas of the piano.
This is my favorite Roll-Up tool kit for everyday screwdrivers, flatheads, hex-bits etc.
The best part is that it has a smaller precision set of heads that is best for working on electronic equipment that requires smaller screwdrivers.
The interchangeable handles makes it compact and easy to store in your tool bag.
This piano fallboard lock is extremely easy to install. All it takes is a couple of screws and 10 minutes of your time.
Keep your piano safe from those who shouldn't be playing on the piano!
DeWALT Drill Review
I use this drill for all of my Damppchaser installations. It's compact and has just the right amount of power I need for basic work.
I also purchased this drill to try it out.
It's also very nice to work with and gives you a few extra tips to play around with. It offers about the same about of power and size when comparing to the DeWalt drill (above).
